Famous director Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, which tells the story of the creation of the atomic bomb, managed to break a record in another category, even though it fell behind Barbie in total box office.
Oppenheimer became the highest-grossing film among biopics
The creation of the atomic bomb proved more popular at the box office than one of the biggest rock bands. Oppenheimer managed to earn more profits worldwide than Bohemian Rhapsody, making it the highest-grossing biopic ever.
Oppenheimer grossed over $912 million worldwide after its ninth weekend in theaters, with the film earning another $12 million. This figure put Oppenheimer ahead of Bohemian Rhapsody, about Freddie Mercury, which previously held the record for a biopic with $902 million.

The Barbie movie is very close to the $1 billion box office figure. Barbie, which debuted on July 21, may be the most watched movie of 2023.
Oppenheimer’s IMAX work certainly played a major role in this race, with the film earning $179 million from those screens alone.
This isn’t Oppenheimer’s first headline-grabbing success at the box office, either. Starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Florence Pugh, the film is director Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie after Batman in the USA. It’s ranked ahead only by The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises biopic.
On top of that, Oppenheimer surpassed Deadpool 2 to become the second highest-grossing adult-rated film at the worldwide box office earlier this month. Nolan’s film is currently behind Joker in this category, but it will probably not be able to gross more than $1 billion.
