One of the Most Important Structures of the Ethereum (ETH) Ecosystem Sues This Company

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) The company behind the protocol is suing web hosting platform GoDaddy for selling the eth.link domain name to a third party, according to a filing filed Monday.

GoDaddy Allegedly Sells Domain Name Owned by Ethereum Name Service

True Names Ltd., the company behind the ENS domain name service, claims that GoDaddy not only falsely announced to eth.link users that the domain name registration had expired, but also sold the domain before the date it should have been returned to the registry and available for repurchase.

The ENS protocol is responsible for all web addresses ending in .eth used by the Ethereum community and acts as the Web3 version of a domain service provider.

Normally domain renewal registrations are quite simple, but Virgil Griffith, the only person who can re-register the ENS domain name eth.link, is currently in jail.

Griffith was sentenced to 63 months in prison for training North Koreans on how to use crypto as a way to evade sanctions.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court of Arizona, alleges that registration will expire on July 26, 2023, but in August, GoDaddy falsely announced that registration would expire on July 26, 2022.

According to the file, GoDaddy said the domain could be purchased again on September 5, 2022, but transferred eth.link to another third party on September 3. cryptocurrency had sold the start-up to Manifold Finance.

The following statements were used in the complaint made by ENS:

“GoDaddy did this to the plaintiff True Names Ltd. deprived the company of its source of livelihood. The sale would disable a valuable cryptocurrency network and risk making it recklessly available to large numbers of malicious people.”

Plaintiffs True Names and Griffith seek at least $75,000 in damages excluding legal costs, and defendants claim GoDaddy, Inc., GoDaddy.com LLC and all employees who directly or indirectly consented to the expiration and third-party acquisition of eth.link or pending a temporary restraining order against organizations.
