Since the war in Ukraine, it has been more unclear than ever where Germany’s energy is to come from in the future, and it will also be climate-neutral.

Berlin, Dusseldorf A year ago nobody would have thought it possible that diesel at Germany’s gas stations would be more expensive than premium petrol. Or the electricity bill triples. And the gas: anyone who heats their average terraced house with it currently pays a little more than 2,000 euros per year. A year ago it was 1100 euros – makes plus 86 percent.

Sure: It was clear that energy would become more expensive at the latest when the German government, still under Angela Merkel, decided to introduce a national CO2 price for petrol, diesel, heating oil and natural gas. The price is to increase gradually to 55 euros by 2025 and is currently 30 euros per tonne of CO2 emissions. If fossil energy costs people more, that is politically desirable.

The fact that rising energy costs are now becoming an existential problem for many citizens – that was not planned.
