Brussels The destruction of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipelines was apparently the work of pro-Ukrainian saboteurs. The New York Times reports on Tuesday, citing American government officials. The information was confirmed to the Handelsblatt.
There is no evidence that the government in Kiev was involved in the planning. Nevertheless, the report is of the highest political importance. If it is confirmed that pro-Ukrainian forces carried out the attack, this could lead to considerable tensions in the western alliance. After the explosions, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) spoke of a “deliberate disruption of the European energy infrastructure” that was “unacceptable”.
The Nord Stream pipelines were co-financed by European companies and were considered a central element of Germany’s energy supply until the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
