The FCC has enacted a new practice called the “5-Year Rule” for space litter. According to the rule, a satellite whose mission has ended will be removed from its orbit at the end of 5 years, preventing it from occupying space in space. Previously, this rule was 25 years. But 25 years is a long time. There’s no reason to wait that long anymore, especially in low earth orbit. We need to do more to keep the space age growing and to clean ourselves up.

NASA’s Moon satellite CAPSTONE failed to make its last successful maneuver on September 8, putting itself into safe mode.
Rosenworcel said that about 10,000 satellites weighing “thousands of metric tons” have been launched since 1957, of which more than half are currently inactive. However, some US representatives do not find this decision correct. Representatives think the rule was taken under the influence of NASA.
