Having unintentionally disposed of over 8,000 Bitcoins on an old hard drive, James Howells devised a plan to save the cryptocurrency.
Howells is familiar to the crypto community, but gained his reputation because of a bad experience. Howells had two identical laptop hard drives in a drawer in 2013. One was empty; the other contained 8,000 Bitcoins, according to Howells’ claim. He had wanted to throw out the empty one, but instead the driver containing the cryptocurrency went to the local dump with a garbage bag.
Now Howells has devised a $11 million plan to recover the hard drive, which was worth about $175 million at the time of this writing. Howells wants to bring his plan to life using a robot dog. He is looking to purchase two robotic “Spot” dogs, which are on sale for $74,500 each in June 2020.
In the interview, Howells said in particular that the robots will be used both to act as roaming CCTV cameras to provide security and to search for his stolen hard drive. In addition, the investor said that he would like to name the robot dogs “Satoshi” and “Hal” if the project is successful. Hal Finney was the first person to be on the receiving end of a Bitcoin transaction. Satoshi Nakamoto is known as the person who invented Bitcoin.
In addition, Howells said in an interview that he developed his strategy with the help of knowledgeable advisors and received investment offers from two venture capitalists. He hopes Newport City Council will let him dig up the dump as a result. Since 2013, City Council has consistently refused to let Howells land in the dump. Howells, 36, hopes that the authorities will allow him to organize a high-tech treasure hunt for buried Bitcoins.
