Dusseldorf The 14 artists couldn’t have chosen a more suitable location for their “Lost Places” exhibition: City C, the oldest shopping arcade in downtown Leverkusen, is a concrete nightmare. Most of the shops are empty, and hardly a customer ever strays into the desolate gorges of the center, which opened in 1969.

For many years the city has tried to revitalize this eyesore. But the current community of almost 100 owners is no longer ready to invest. And there is no new operator to take over the entire complex.

No wonder, as the once celebrated retail format of the shopping mall is deeply in crisis: for years, an average of 15 new shopping centers per year have been opened in Germany, but so far only one newly built center has opened this year. And the existing malls are struggling with vacancies and falling sales.
