Berlin The German construction industry accuses the federal government of neglecting renovation when modernizing the building sector. “During the discussion about the use of new heating systems, too little attention is paid to the question of whether and how an energy-related renovation of the building envelope makes sense as an additional or alternative option,” said Felix Pakleppa, general manager of the German Construction Industry Association (ZDB), the Handelsblatt.

The main reason for the criticism is the Brussels plans for a new EU building directive. This provides for far-reaching obligations for the energetic modernization of buildings. The EU wants to oblige owners of older houses to put more money into insulation in order to reduce heat loss and thus energy consumption.
