Natural gas for the chemical industry: BASF complains, Dow acts

BASF whines, the competition acts. That’s the impression that’s coming through these days with the news from the chemical industry. While BASF CEO Martin Brudermüller issued drastic warnings about a boycott of Russian gas supplies, the US company Dow Chemical took action and participated in the construction of a liquid gas terminal in Stade.

The contrast sheds light on what is probably the most delicate challenge currently facing the German chemical industry and its industry leader: What can one still do on one’s own to cushion a short-term failure of Russian gas supplies, and is there really enough happening in this regard already?
