Birmingham, Perth The British Flixbus competitor National Express wants to take over the competitor Stagecoach and thus forge a national transport giant. The plan is for the market leader to take over 75 percent of the new group and the Stagecoach shareholders to keep 25 percent, as the company announced on Tuesday. With the merger, the bus providers hit by the pandemic want to reduce costs – for example by sharing depots and routes. They want to enable the necessary investments to make their fleets more environmentally friendly.

The deal values Stagecoach, one of the largest providers in the UK with around 8,500 buses and 25,000 employees, with a market value of around £ 445 million (€ 518 million). The roughly £ 1.4 billion competitor National Express is the country’s largest long-distance bus operator and the second largest school bus operator. In 2009, National Express rejected a £ 1.7 billion takeover bid from Stagecoach.
