Amazon and Lockheed Martin, working with NASA, announced that Alexa will be part of the Artemis I space mission. Alexa will be used on the agency’s spacecraft Orion as part of the Callisto payload to be added to the spacecraft.

Alexa, which will be sent into space by NASA, will take care of astronauts. For this reason, it will have access to the spacecraft’s systems and telemetry data during the mission. In addition, the space agency will allow Alexa to retrieve all kinds of information from Earth, such as news briefings and sports scores. Hence, it will provide access to the Deep Space Network. This feature will allow astronauts to stay informed about what is going on in the world while in space and to feel more connected to their home. According to Amazon, Alexa’s voice interactions will make the crew’s life easier and more efficient.
Artemis I will be an uncrewed mission. For this reason, NASA will provide remote access to Callisto through the Mission Control Center to test Alexa in space. In this way, they will be able to interact and create a virtual team experience. Everything that happens on the spacecraft will be recorded. It will then be sent back to Earth, where engineers will analyze the data and develop the technology for future missions.
Aaron Rubenson, vice president of Amazon Alexa Everywhere, made the following statement on the subject:
The Star Trek computer was part of our original inspiration for Alexa. That’s why it’s very exciting to see our vision of ambient intelligence come to life in Orion.
Users using Alexa compatible devices during the Artemis I task will be able to get information about the task. Customers will have access to Orion’s telemetry data and dismissed videos and photos. Additionally, Amazon noted that a live stream will also be available at launch, and customers with compatible devices will be able to see videos of space interactions with Alexa.
Amazon will be launching new Alexa features as the timeline approaches. However, there is currently a preview available on Alexa compatible devices. If you want to experience it too, simply say “Alexa, take me to the Moon”.
Since Artemis I aims to bring the first woman and people of color to the Moon, attention is already high. NASA and Amazon will also benefit from this interest. Of course, it will first be tested how ambient intelligence can help astronauts in space.
