Berlin Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Economics and Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck have been elected to the Green Party Council. At the online party conference on Saturday, Baerbock received an approval of 68.31 percent from 688 delegates in a ballot to fill the seats reserved for women in the party council. Habeck achieved approval from 71.71 percent of the 707 delegates who took part in the relevant ballot.

Baerbock and Habeck had led the Greens in tandem for four years and, according to party rules, could not remain party chairmen as ministers. The two Greens parliamentary group leaders, Katharina Dröge and Britta Haßelmann, were also elected to the party council.

The Greens also voted on other board members. Marc Urbatsch was confirmed as Federal Treasurer on Saturday, who received almost 67 percent of the votes in a counter-candidate. Pegah Edalatian from North Rhine-Westphalia was elected as the new deputy chairman, and Heiko Knopf from Thuringia as the new deputy chairman, who prevailed over three competitors.

Looking back on Saturday, Urbatsch admitted to himself that the party executive had made mistakes in the approval of corona bonuses. “One thing is clear: With the knowledge we have today, we would no longer make such a decision,” said Urbatsch. “Internal party criticism of this is understandable and justified.” The Berlin public prosecutor’s office is investigating the initial suspicion of infidelity against the entire Federal Executive Committee of the Greens. The board has now paid back the bonuses, the rules have been changed.

Before the election of the other board members, the social politician Ricarda Lang and the foreign politician Omid Nouripour were elected the new federal chairmen on Saturday, and Emily Büning was chosen as the new political federal manager. The digital votes now have to be formally confirmed by postal vote, which should happen by February 14th. Only then are the new ones formally in office.
