Berlin Inventors with foreign roots are becoming increasingly important for the innovative power of the Federal Republic. More than every tenth (12.2 percent) of patents registered in Germany in 2019 can now be traced back to inventors with foreign roots, according to a study by the German Economic Institute (IW), which is available to the Handelsblatt.
According to the data, the proportion of inventors with a migration background in all patents developed in Germany has risen steadily – from 7.5 percent in 2010 to 9.6 percent in 2015 and finally to 12.2 percent in 2019. This article is ” essential for Germany’s innovative strength,” write the IW scientists.
This increase is due exclusively to inventors with foreign roots, the study emphasizes. “Without them, Germany’s overall patent activity would have fallen,” write the authors of the study.
