The Ministry of Health is launching a program across Turkey that will enable couples to learn before marriage whether their baby will be born with SMA and take precautions accordingly. The program will thus reduce the number of SMA births in Turkey.
SMA patients have difficulties in treatment, not only in Turkey, but all over the world. Unfortunately, the vast majority of patients do not have access to treatment, as the biggest factor preventing families from healing their children is the high fees required for treatments. But today, a big step has been taken to prevent SMA disease in Turkey.
It was initiated by Ankara Metropolitan Municipality and SMA test should be given to couples who are going to get married. The program is also initiated by the Ministry of Health. All couples to be married in 81 provinces within the scope of the program called SMA Carrier Screening Program, they will be able to get free SMA scan.

SMA is an inherited disease. Therefore, couples who are going to get married will be able to understand whether their baby will be born with SMA, thanks to the tests done beforehand. Thus, parents will be able to take precautions before birth. Couples who want to prevent their baby from being born with SMA will be directed to IVF.
