With the latest Patch Tuesday update, Microsoft closed 49 CVE-tagged Wi-Fi vulnerabilities in its products. One of these vulnerabilities is rated critical with a CVSS severity rating of 9.8 out of 10 and falls into the “most likely exploit” category. This critical bug allows anyone using the same public Wi-Fi network to perform a remote attack.

This vulnerability is caused by a remote code execution (RCE) issue in the Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) system. By sending a specially crafted malicious MSMQ packet, an attacker can execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable Windows system (for example, a Windows Server box). This error affects Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2008 and later.
RCE vulnerabilities are dangerous because they do not require physical access. In this case, it is enough for the attackers to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Attackers can easily exploit this bug by sending a specially crafted network packet to a vulnerable device. This is especially dangerous for people who like to work in public places such as libraries, coffee shops or airports.

Microsoft stated that there is no evidence of this vulnerability being exploited in the wild. However, once a vulnerability is published, it is not uncommon for malicious actors to act quickly. No exploits were detected for this vulnerability, compared to two zero-day vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-30040 and CVE-2024-30051) that were patched and actively exploited in May 2024.
This update is described as a relatively minor patch for Microsoft. According to Dustin Childs of the Zero Day Initiative, when third-party CVEs are included, the number of CVEs documented this month actually reaches 58. Microsoft also released Windows 11 Build 26241 beta. This version includes a new feature that makes it easier to move files in File Explorer.
Users will be able to move files via drag-and-drop between breadcrumbs in the File Explorer Address Bar. Additionally, a thin border has been added to make it easier to see selected files or folders in File Explorer. This beta version also fixed an underlying issue that caused File Explorer to crash when navigating to its Home page.
