Berlin At 28 degrees in the shade, there’s no need to argue – especially at the summer festival of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Berlin. Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (47) stands at the entrance to the state representation and greets his party colleague Friedrich Merz, 67, with demonstrative friendliness. The CDU leader is no less pleased on this sultry midsummer evening.

A “devastating week” lies behind both of them, as the party says. A week in which Wüst and Merz argued on the open stage about the question: who will be the CDU’s candidate for chancellor? At the summer party, they toast each other with beer. As if they wanted to make people forget what Wüst had said in an interview a week earlier.
