Merck wants to attract skilled workers with fertility treatments

Berlin Hormone treatment, sperm donation, artificial insemination: fertility treatment is not only emotionally stressful, but also expensive. Depending on how long it takes to achieve success, costs of several thousand euros will be incurred. The health insurance companies do cover a portion – but only under certain conditions. Statutory health insurance funds only pay if the couple is married.

An unfulfilled desire to have children affects many people. According to the Ministry of Family Affairs, almost one in ten couples between the ages of 25 and 59 are involuntarily childless, and according to the World Health Organization, it is even one in seven worldwide.

In the USA, more and more companies are offering their employees so-called fertility benefits, i.e. support with fertility treatment. These include, for example, the tech companies Apple and Google – and also the German chemical and pharmaceutical giant Merck.
