Membership fees – The Greens are the “most expensive” party – domestic politics

Who would have thought that!

Ironically, the Greens and Left, who position themselves particularly in social issues, are apparently the parties of the higher earners! An analysis of the membership fees of German parties showed that the members of the Greens and the Left put down the most for their party book.

► Specifically: In the case of the Greens, the members paid the highest annual fee per capita at 177 euros. This makes them Germany’s “most expensive” party.

Then comes the Left (170 euros), the FDP (150 euros), the SPD (124 euros), AfD (109 euros) and the CDU (92 euros). The cheapest option is membership of the CSU (74 euros). This was the result of an analysis by “Berkow Consulting” based on the last available data from the German Bundestag.

However, the amount of the contributions depends primarily on the income of the members. To put it plainly: The Greens are the high-earning party with an average annual contribution of more than 170 euros.

► The eco party also seems to benefit twice. Because especially the Greens can look forward to a sharp increase in the premium volume (plus 154 percent).

Reason: While the number of members decreased in all other parties, it doubled in the case of the Greens between 2009 and 2019 (100 percent).

Overall, the price that members paid rose by an average of 33 percent between 2009 and 2019 – and thus significantly faster than inflation during this period (14 percent).

► Membership fees for the SPD rose by as much as 39 percent – and for the Greens by a whopping 38 percent.
