Berlin The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania under Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has made more intensive efforts to obtain a tax exemption for the climate foundation than previously known. In autumn 2021, representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the State Chancellery exchanged views on retrospective classification as a non-profit organization, even though the foundation had a strong commercial focus. The current Minister of Finance of the federal state Heiko Geue (SPD) was involved. This emerges from correspondence between the ministries, which is available to the Handelsblatt.

The climate foundation was founded in early 2021 as a protective shield against impending US sanctions to complete the construction of the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline. The foundation received 20 million euros as start-up aid from a subsidiary of the Russian state-owned company Gazprom. The new company had to pay almost half of this in gift tax.
