Dusseldorf Together they employ around 1.3 million people – and, as innovators for the manufacturing industry, are part of the country’s industrial backbone: But German mechanical engineers were hit hard by the corona crisis.

While other branches of the economy have long since returned to the pre-crisis level, machine-builders will only recover from the corona setback in the coming year, according to the current forecast by the Association of German Machine and Plant Builders (VDMA).

The reason for the delay: When companies around the world shut down their factories, machine-builders feel the reluctance to invest first and benefit from the upturn last. VDMA President Karl Haeusgen is therefore optimistic: “The growth in mechanical engineering is currently unusually high.”
