Riga People trapped by water masses, an interrupted drinking water supply, massive damage to the ecosystem: on the day after the destruction of the Kachowka dam in southern Ukraine, the first effects of the disaster become clear.
The dam on the Dnieper River, which is about 70 kilometers east of the city of Cherson, was destroyed on Tuesday morning. Ukraine accused Russia of blowing up the dam. Russian troops control the area and the dam, and Ukraine has been warning for months that the occupiers could blow it up. In this area, the Dnieper practically forms the front line.
Russia, on the other hand, blamed Ukrainian shelling for the destruction. Intelligence agencies of Ukraine’s allies, including the US, are still investigating who is responsible for the blast but are leaning towards Russia, Bloomberg news agency writes, citing a Western official. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed an independent commission of inquiry.
