Many electric cars are overpowered and expensive

Vienna Electric cars are typically three times more efficient than combustion engines. You need fewer wearing parts. And calculated over their life cycle, they often already have a significantly better carbon dioxide balance than diesel or petrol engines.

“However, electric cars are not sustainable per se,” states Stefan Bratzel, Director of the Center of Automotive Management (CAM). According to his observation, many Stromers are overpowered and unnecessarily heavy. “This is to be assessed very critically from an ecological point of view,” says Bratzel. Electric cars with more power need a larger battery for the same range, which makes the vehicles more expensive.

For his analysis, the industry expert evaluated the technical data and sales figures of all 73 battery-electric car models that were newly registered in Germany from January to September 2022. For the price and motorization of the series, an average was formed from the basic equipment and the top variant.
