Although they do not have as high energy densities as lithium-ion batteries, these batteries can regain their storage capacity over time with their renewable properties. For the new battery technology, the Technical University of Vienna has already filed a patent application together with its cooperation partners in Spain. Oxygen-ion batteries are thought to be an excellent solution, especially for large energy storage systems produced from renewable sources.
The materials that the Vienna Technical University team worked on, which succeeded in producing batteries with ceramic materials instead of metals, store energy with the movement of oxygen ions with twice the negative charge. When the oxygen ions in the new batteries are excited, electric current is produced by passing from one ceramic material to another.
The new technology, which eliminates the risk of fire in lithium-ion batteries due to the non-combustibility of ceramics, also promises a long-lasting use as it is easily renewable. Low energy density is seen as the only disadvantage of this new technology.
