Frankfurt The specifications are clear: building in Germany should be cheaper and faster. In the fight against the housing shortage, Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz is therefore also relying on houses in the modular system. For critics, this sounds suspiciously like the comeback of prefabricated buildings, but supporters get enthusiastic about this design.

In the Alliance for Affordable Housing, in which representatives from politics, business and civil society are looking for ways to create 400,000 new buildings per year in the future, serial construction is a priority. This week, Geywitz even set up an office for ‘serial construction’, which is intended to make it easier to issue type approvals and expand funding. What is this type of construction capable of – and what are its weaknesses?
