As early as Saturday morning, 30 to 40 masked people had thrown stones and bags of paint at a bank branch in the northeast of the city and ignited pyrotechnics. Witnesses alerted the police, who no longer found any suspects.

On Saturday, three left-wing demonstrations were banned in Leipzig. Nevertheless, around 2000 police officers were on duty, as Autonomous groups had previously mobilized nationwide. The police had stressed several times that they were expecting “violent people from the left-wing extremist spectrum”.

In order to enforce the ban, the police had set up a large control area in the city to check incoming traffic. “70 vehicles and 130 people were checked. In individual cases we have issued a residence ban, ”said police spokesman Olaf Hoppe.
