Kremlin could attack Europe’s critical infrastructure

Brussels, Berlin Vladimir Putin is a rational person who has completely miscalculated: This is how US President Joe Biden last described the Russian despot. Biden had Russia’s faltering war of aggression against Ukraine in mind. But the observation can also be applied to Russian attempts to defeat the EU with an energy war. Although hardly any Russian gas flows to Europe, prices are falling rapidly. Putin’s calculation does not add up.

A megawatt hour of gas currently costs around 115 euros. At the end of August 2022, the wholesale price for on the Dutch TTF exchange was almost 350 euros. Putin’s energy weapon is losing its terror. The Russians not only underestimated the Ukrainians’ will to fight, as has now become apparent, but also the EU’s economic resilience.
