Joe Biden wants to run for a second time in 2024

Washington US President Joe Biden is running for a second term. The 80-year-old announced on Tuesday that he wanted to run again as a candidate for the Democratic Party in the November 2024 presidential election. He gave the official starting signal for his re-election campaign.

Biden would be 81 in the 2024 election, 82 at the start of a second term, and 86 at the end. Given his age, however, even within Biden’s own party there are reservations as to whether he is the best candidate. Nearly two-thirds of US citizens want an upper age limit for presidents, according to a University of Massachusetts poll.

Biden likes to flirt with the fact that he is the oldest US President of all time. “I know I don’t look like it, but I’ve been doing the job for a few years,” he said a few weeks ago.

After his victory in 2020, the reading of many observers was that Biden would probably only serve one term simply because of his age. After that, the way would be free for Vice President Kamala Harris to run, so the speculation goes. But most recently, Biden had repeatedly emphasized that he could imagine a second term in office.

In last fall’s congressional elections, Biden’s Democrats fared much better than expected, in part by mobilizing younger generations. His personal doctor had certified the president’s “robust health” in February.

The time leading up to the November 2024 elections is likely to be extremely challenging for Biden: the Republicans, who hold the majority in the House of Representatives, are driving Biden ahead of them. In return for their cooperation in raising the debt ceiling, they want to force cuts in social spending. If the two sides do not agree, there is a risk that government spending will be blocked again.

Republicans are also investigating Biden in a documents affair and his son, Hunter Biden, investigating his past business dealings with Ukraine.
