Washington If there’s a lesson to be learned from the US congressional elections, it’s this: expect the unexpected. For weeks, pollsters had predicted a Republican march through. The Conservatives could easily win one or even two chambers in the US Congress, according to forecasts. After all, according to the unwritten rule, the ruling party is punished in midterm elections.

But then things turned out differently. US President Joe Biden’s Democrats have notched up crucial victories, particularly in key swing states (where elections are consistently close). And at the same time, many candidates supported by ex-President Donald Trump performed worse than forecast.

The balance of power in Washington is still unclear. Anything is still possible: a divided Congress, a Republican Congress – or even one that remains in Democratic hands, although the latter would be very unusual.
