Jamie Lee Curtis – daughter Ruby speaks for the first time about coming out as a trans woman

“Halloween” star Jamie Lee Curtis (62) turned out to be a “grateful student” for her daughter Ruby (25) after her trans child came out in early August, the Hollywood actress now confesses in the current one People magazine.

In the exclusive interview, mother and daughter talk about the moment Ruby came out to her and about the path they have walked together since then.

Ruby Guest (her father’s last name, Christopher Guest) remembers coming out like this: “It was intimidating – but I wasn’t worried.” Her parents, who have been married for 37 years, would have them anyway her “whole life so accepted”.

At 16, Ruby had a conversation with a friend who is also trans. Then she knew that she, too, was “different”. The boyfriend asked her about her gender, and although Ruby initially replied: “I am male”, she then “kept thinking about this aspect”.

“I knew I was different – maybe not Ruby per se, but I knew I was different,” she explained. “But I had a negative experience in therapy, so I didn’t come out (as trans) straight away, although I probably should have.”

Getting used to the new name was “the hardest”

It would be another seven years before they came out: “I was still Tom when I told the person I’m now engaged to that I was probably trans. And she said, ‘I love you for who you are,’ ”says Ruby. After all, the now 25-year-old also confided in her parents – via SMS.

Curtis said there were “a few tears,” but she called back immediately to show her love for her child.

In the interview, the “Halloween” star also admits that getting used to Ruby’s new name was “the hardest” for her: “It wasn’t easy to get used to.” After all, it was “the name that you give yours Child has given. That you have said all your life. “

It was “some kind of evolution and a very important step in our house” to make sure that she and her husband use Ruby’s new name and pronouns. In this way she would still “learn new things”, such as speaking a “new language”, even though she knows that she “will make mistakes”.

“You slow down your speech a little,” says Jamie Lee Curtis. “You become a little more attentive to WHAT you say and HOW you say it. I still make mistakes, but we're all human.

And further: “If only one person reads this now, sees the photo of Ruby and me and then thinks: ‘I feel free to say who I really am.'”, Then the trip will have been “worth it” for them as a mother. .

Ruby is “happy to talk about my experience now,” even if she had previously tried to stay out of the spotlight. Contrary to all rumors, her coming out has nothing to do with “my mother’s famous,” she says. But: “I’m happy to be more visible, should it help others.”

She always wants to support her daughter

Jamie Lee does not want to “proselytize” or “impose something on people” with the interview. Instead, she just wants to show her support by sharing her family’s experiences with the world.

“I’m here to support Ruby. This is my task. Just like I take care of her older sister Annie, love her and support her on her way. “

In conclusion, Ruby concludes that her mother “did the best that can be done,” and that’s all she wanted. Helping others to accept the trans community more and to understand it better is not just “our private matter”, but “should be a very human matter”.
