Sundar Pichai is looking for the right superlatives. Artificial intelligence (AI) is “the most profound technology that mankind is working on,” said the head of Google’s parent company Alphabet on Sunday on the US broadcaster CBS. The technology will have a greater impact “than fire, electricity or anything we’ve ever done in the past.”
For months, technology companies have been competing for the best applications of artificial intelligence, powered by ChatGPT. The new euphoria also aroused among investors. Alphabet stock is up 22 percent this year. The software company Microsoft, which has a stake in Open-AI, the developer of ChatGPT, has gained 19 percent on the stock exchange since the beginning of January. This also gave a boost to the broader US indices, in which technology companies play a large role.
