Second runway for Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport!

With the opening held today, the long-planned new runway came into service. In this way, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport will host 37 million passengers by the end of 2023. In addition, the airport will reach passenger numbers of up to 63 million in 2024.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport, which regulates Istanbul’s air traffic together with Istanbul Airport, was put into service in 2001. At that time, it was serving together with Atatürk Airport, which controlled active commercial flights and was located on the European side.

The airport normally served with a single runway. With the decision taken in 2012, it was decided to build a second runway at the airport. Afterwards, the work started. The project has a total value of 970 million dollars, including infrastructure improvements, new runway and maintenance of the old runway.

The opening was made today, Monday, December 25, 2023 by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Besides the opening of the runway, the President humorously referred to Turkey’s flag carrier airlines, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus. Then he received news of new aircraft for the fleets.

300 new planes for THY and 150 new planes for Pegasus!

During the opening, President Erdoğan made a humorous reference to Pegasus. To Ali Sabancı: “Mr. Ali, the 2nd runway has been activated.” said. Then he mentioned Turkish Airlines’ order for 300 aircraft. Sabancı then talked about the order for 150 new aircraft to join the Pegasus fleet.
