Dusseldorf Every six months, the Federal Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) asks its member companies how high their electricity prices are for a specific annual consumption. On average, the price for households in January was higher than ever before: 48 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). At the same time, the industry is attracting those who are willing to switch: the electricity tariffs offered for new customers sometimes cost ten cents per kWh less.

The reason for the large price difference between the existing electricity tariffs and the new tariffs is the strong fluctuations on the electricity exchange for the past year. The greatest lever for electricity providers to stand out from the competition in terms of price is in the electricity purchase. Those who procure cheaply can offer lower prices, says electricity market expert Mirko Schlossarczyk from the consulting firm Enervis.
