Is artificial intelligence a threat to our democracy?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is having an increasing impact on our society. And that also has negative aspects. AI-generated and sometimes deceptively real-looking forgeries of photos and videos, for example, ensure that so-called fake news gets into circulation and thus has a say in public debates.

Through the mass sharing of posts, bots in social networks ensure that certain posts and opinions achieve an artificially generated high reach. They can hardly be distinguished from regular user profiles. Both examples show how AI can endanger our democracy and political participation.

But AI also has great potential. What advantages can AI have for citizens? What tricks can be used to unmask AI-generated fakes? How can legal requirements contain risks from AI?

The Handelsblatt clarifies in conversation dr Achim RettingerProfessor of Computational Linguistics at the University of Trier, and with dr Nils Kobis from the Max Planck Institute’s Human and Machine research area, how artificial intelligence influences our democracy.
