The Dow Jones index of standard values closed 0.9 percent higher at 34,261 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq advanced 0.6 percent to 13,760 points. The broad S&P 500 gained 0.7 percent to 4439 points.
Investors were hoping for a slowdown in inflation figures expected on Wednesday, which could signal the Fed that rate hikes are working and that future rate hikes could end earlier, said Peter Andersen, founder of Andersen Capital Management.
