Investing in times of crisis – you ask, we answer (part 2)

Dusseldorf Within just one year, the world has experienced a fundamental change that is increasingly making itself felt in the business world: inflation, fears of recession and interest rate hikes are putting investors’ portfolios to a hard test. Accordingly, many want to readjust their portfolio and make it crisis-proof.

Handelsblatt Today has collected questions from listeners on the subject of anti-crisis depots and has them answered by the specialist authors from the investment team in a two-part podcast special. In the first part of the special, Markus Hinterberger, chief reporter of the Handelsblatt investment team, answered questions from our listeners. In addition to dividend stocks and ETFs, the opportunities and risks of real estate stocks were also discussed.

In this second part, Handelsblatt financial investment boss Anke Rezmer explains why the age of the investor plays a decisive role. “Age roughly determines the possible duration of an investment. The longer you save or invest, the stronger the compound interest effect, for example,” says Rezmer.

Rezmer discusses with host Agatha Kremplewski how investors can generally start saving in times of crisis and who will benefit from rising interest rates in the USA.

Habeck plans cheaper electricity for consumers

Also: After the end of the gas surcharge, the federal government is now looking for other solutions to regulate the rising gas prices. Originally, the surcharge was intended to support gas companies badly hit by the war. Compensation payments, which should go through the consumers, were planned for this.

Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) is now planning to introduce an electricity price brake: Consumers should be relieved by giving every household a basic quota of discounted electricity. This should be based on previous consumption. In the podcast, Handelsblatt energy expert Catiana Krapp explains how the implementation is planned – and why the renewable energy industry of all people is criticizing the proposal.
