Six-figure salaries and regular promotions: McKinsey’s reputation as a career springboard precedes it. Anyone who works for the number one strategy consultancy gets an insight into the most important companies, helps them to work efficiently or to transform business models. Many Dax board members such as Claudia Nemat (Telekom) or Frank Appel (Deutsche Post) started out as “Meckies”.

Despite the crisis, there are enough entry opportunities: McKinsey wants to fill 1,000 jobs in Germany and Austria by 2022. Two thirds of these are advisory positions, and sustainability or digitization experts are in demand. In addition to excellent university graduates, experienced career changers “such as computer scientists, engineers, doctors, but also lawyers have good chances of working for McKinsey,” says Jonathan Steinbach, Head of Recruiting at McKinsey Germany. We asked Steinbach and three insiders about career paths at Elite Consulting and what the salaries are.
