Inflation in Germany rises to 7.9 percent

Frankfurt Inflation in Germany rose again in August. Consumer prices increased by 7.9 percent compared to the previous year. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office on Tuesday based on a preliminary estimate.

In July, the figure was 7.5 percent. In May, goods and services had already risen by 7.9 percent, the highest since the early 1970s.

Economists surveyed by the Reuters news agency had expected the inflation rate to rise by 7.8 percent in August.

The biggest price driver has long been energy. In August, it rose by 35.6 percent, about as much as in July. Food cost 16.6 percent more than in August 2021. Services had to pay 2.2 (July: +2.0) percent more.

The price development is currently being dampened somewhat by the tank discount and the nine-euro ticket. However, both measures expire at the end of August.
