Indonesia wants to become the workbench of German electric car manufacturers

jakarta The global competition for the future electromobility market is in full swing. Will German car companies no longer produce their batteries and e-vehicles in Europe but in Indonesia? At least that’s what Indonesian President Joko Widodo wants, who in the Handelsblatt interview is campaigning massively for German car manufacturers.

His message: The country with the world’s largest nickel deposits is the ideal production location for the German automotive industry. This makes it possible for the corporations to cover the entire supply chain – from the nickel smelting plants to battery production to the finished car. Indonesia is set to become the global center of the automotive industry.

The trend towards e-cars represents a great opportunity for emerging countries. The financial services provider S&P Global estimates that the market for batteries alone will increase sevenfold by 2030. It is correspondingly attractive to now settle as large a part of the battery supply chain as possible.
