Bangkok With a summit meeting by Russia and its supporters, India continues its geopolitical balancing act. A week and a half after his state visit to the United States, where he was received as a key American partner, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday brought together members of the increasingly anti-Western Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for a virtual exchange.
He chairs the group this year – and at the event gave Russian President Vladimir Putin the opportunity to present himself as a statesman with international friends.
At his first summit appearance after the failed uprising by the Russian mercenary group Wagner, Putin claimed that the Russian people were more united than ever. He also thanked his SCO counterparts who “expressed their support for the Russian leadership and their actions” in the face of the uprising.
