Dusseldorf Self-doubt is an unwelcome companion at work that nobody likes to talk about – and yet it is very common: According to a survey by the LinkedIn careers platform, four out of ten Germans say that they do not have confidence in their own abilities and that success is often seen as a “lucky stroke” or ” coincidence”. A third of German employees also stated that the corona pandemic had weakened their self-confidence at work.

According to studies, women in particular often evaluate themselves too critically. In a study by the International University of Applied Sciences in Bad Honnef/Bonn, for example, women assessed their skills as significantly worse than they were perceived – and on the other hand tended to be more self-critical than the male test subjects.

But why are doubts about one’s own skills in the work context so common? And how can they be overcome? The Handelsblatt spoke to various experts about this and identified nine steps to silence your inner critic.
