İlber Ortaylı: Ban the Minimum Wage in Istanbul

Famous historian Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı brought the issue to the minimum wage in his speech on the social cause of femicide. Ortaylı started a brand new discussion by stating that the minimum wage should be banned in Istanbul.

While the minimum wage, which was increased by 50% in 2022, is already melting away due to inflation, a new name has joined the minimum wage discussions today. Famous historian Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı, in an interview organized by Beykent University students, to economic inequality mentioned.

İlber Ortaylı said in his statement that he talked about femicides. “Men cannot tolerate the changing lives of women, and the murders are on the rise. In fact, the one who is almost killed becomes the criminal. This is what happened a situation created by rapid urbanization started as. Ortaylı continued his words about the minimum wage as follows:

“Education of the villagers started with special methods in the last periods of the Ottoman Empire and the beginning of the Republic period. We thought about how this population would work. In developing societies, it is thought that men should be educated. Men are given importance with the idea that “men should improve themselves”, but 65% of them work for minimum wage.

Minimum wage should be banned in Istanbul. Minimum wage should not be applied in this city. Under the stairs workshops, fake workshops, underground textile shops, strange chemical leather shops should have no place in this city.”
