Ice hockey: Brendan O’Donnell shakes the dome! | Sports

Then the cathedral became a madhouse again!

After the fantastic 7:1 derby win against the Kölner Haie last Sunday, the Düsseldorfer EG also won against the Schwenninger Wild Wings on Friday with 5:4 (2:2, 1:1, 2:1). Coach Thomas Dolak’s team scored the winning goal from Brendan O’Donnell in front of 6,970 spectators eight (!) seconds before the final whistle…

The DEG had definitely calculated something against Schwenningen. Because – the Wild Wings have won eleven of twelve home games so far this season, getting 31 of the 41 points before the game – that’s first place in the league. However, the Black Forest team are not nearly as strong away from home – they scored eight before their guest game in Düsseldorf Defeats in twelve appearances in front of a foreign audience.

It was a spectacular game that went back and forth! Daniel Pfaffengut gave the guests an early lead (3rd). Phil Varone equalized after a great solo: The striker circled around the opponent’s goal and while everyone was waiting for the pass, he looked for the finish himself from a tight angle (5th) – the 1-1.

Alex Karachun took the lead again for Schwenningen (9th), Victor Svensson (16th) made it 2-2 in the first third. But it was probably an own goal for the guests. After a pass from Varone, O’Donnell gave Düsseldorf a 3-2 lead after exactly 22 minutes, Hungernecker (36th) equalized again.

In the final third, Zach Senyshyn even put the Wild Wings in front again (48th) – after a rare mistake by DEG keeper HenrikmHaukeland. It was Kevin Clark who finally got the deserved 4:4 equalizer (52nd).

106 seconds before the end, Varone gained a majority for DEG after an outstanding solo – and DEG used that to win. Eight (!) seconds before the end, O’Donnell brought the Dome to a boil with his winning goal to make it 5:4!

Defender Sinan Akdag (34) celebrated a special anniversary with the last-minute win – it was already his 900th DEL game. However, the former national player only completed a tiny part of it in the Düsseldorfer EG jersey. For most of his career he was on the ice for the Krefeld Penguins and especially for the Mannheim Eagles.
