Hundreds of Millions of TL Fines for Unwanted Messages

The Commercial Electronic Message Complaint System, established by the Ministry of Commerce in 2015, imposed fines of almost 400 million lira in 8 years.

Since the 2010s, we have seen a disturbing increase in unsolicited commercial messages with the widespread use of smartphones. For message subscriptions that anyone can enter but for some reason it is very difficult to exit. Ministry of Commercein 2015 Commercial Electronic Message Complaint System (TİSS) had made it available.

In this system, where unwanted commercial messages can be reported, 866 thousand 164 complaints were made from 2015 to the end of 2023, according to the shared data. The majority of these messages are SMS messages. The amount of fines imposed for these over the 8-year period was also shared.

A total fine of 398 million 94 thousand 293 lira was imposed on unsolicited commercial messages.

According to the compilation made from the ministry’s activity report, the complained messages 77.08 percent via SMS20.9 percent consists of voice calls and 2.02 percent consists of e-mail messages. This fine of almost 400 million lira, imposed over an 8-year period, covers all of these messages.

Apart from this, it has been put forward to register e-commerce sites. Electronic Commerce Information System (ETBİS)It was put into service in 2017. According to the shared data, as of the end of last year, 35 thousand 327 businesses and 42 thousand 76 websites were registered to the system.

Thanks to the system in question, citizens can easily access the information of both real and legal persons engaged in e-commerce. Of course, it should also be noted that the system prevents unregistered businesses. What are your thoughts about the punishment in question?
