The traffic light coalition wants to support citizens with further one-off payments. But the transfers are proving to be more difficult for the state than expected.

Berlin It sounded like an oath of disclosure. According to Christian Lindner (FDP), the state will not be able to issue one-off payments to citizens in the foreseeable future. The Minister of Finance is preparing a legal basis for the “establishment of a direct payment method for public services” with the annual tax law. But there are problems with the technical implementation.

Lindner explained that it would take around 18 months to link the tax identification number with the citizen’s account data as desired. And then the administration can only manage 100,000 transfers in one day. So sending one-off payments to all taxpayers would take well over a year. Lindner: “It’s not that easy.”
