How Putin Challenges the West: The Editor-in-Chief’s Weekly Review

Good morning dear readers,

Reuters caused a stir last weekend when it ran the news on the ticker that the US government was working on contingency plans for Europe’s gas supplies. And so, on Monday morning, shortly after six o’clock, I got on the plane to Berlin for the Handelsblatt energy summit with one question in particular: Would the USA be able to close the gap if Russia turned off the gas supply?

A few hours later, the response from Eon, RWE, Uniper and other top representatives of the energy industry: Such considerations are pipe dreams. Liquid gas from the USA cannot replace supplies from Russia in an emergency.

As you can see, there was hardly a better time to discuss the future of German energy supply with prominent voices from business and politics. Because not only the Ukraine crisis caused discussions. Also the plans of Economics Minister Robert Habeck, who explained his ambitious climate protection plans at the summit. You can also listen to the conversation this week in my podcast Handelsblatt Disrupt.
