10 Downing Street will have a new resident from today. Liz Truss defeated former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak in a Conservative Party member poll, making her the new British Prime Minister.

In doing so, it is confronted with numerous challenges: Energy costs have more than tripled within a year, the inflation rate could soon rise to 18 percent, and Great Britain is threatened with a recession. But Truss is willing to tackle these tasks. In her short acceptance speech after the announcement of the election results, she promised the British lower taxes, stronger economic growth and support in the energy crisis.

However, it remains to be seen how she intends to cut taxes and raise money for support services at the same time. Financing this on credit could be risky because the interest burden could then increase enormously. Likewise, it should not be easy for her to reject a tax on the billions in profits in the energy industry and at the same time refuse direct state aid to the poorest in the kingdom.

In any case, Truss is met with great skepticism in the EU, and a further deterioration in bilateral relations is expected. Commission officials and MEPs are even warning of a trade war if Truss suspends the Northern Ireland protocol of the Brexit treaty, as announced. This clause governs trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Biggest point of criticism from the British: They see the free movement of goods with Northern Ireland and the political unity of the kingdom at risk. How do you think the relationship with the EU will develop now?
