Berlin Dani Rodrik does not turn against a German finance minister Christian Lindner, as Nobel laureate in economics Joseph Stiglitz has just done. The 64-year-old Harvard economist’s criticism of the ordoliberal ideas of German financial policy is more fundamental: Rodrik speaks out in favor of a paradigm shift in economic policy.
In the Handelsblatt interview, the globalization critic pleads for a policy that is more oriented towards growth and employment. Hyper-globalization and market fundamentalism could not solve the current problems. For Europe, he calls for more flexible debt rules and warns against premature rate hikes. The new economic policy must not become a new ideology, but must look pragmatically for concrete solutions.
