Hair cut: Jurnees dad sues school for $ 1 million – News abroad

Her cute locks make for an expensive litigation …

The father of 7-year-old Jurnee from Michigan USA has sued employees of his daughter’s school for one million dollars in damages – because a teacher simply cut off the little girl’s hair!

The lawsuit was filed in federal court against Mount Pleasant Public Schools, reports “MLive.com“. It states that the girl’s constitutional rights have been violated. It is about racial discrimination, ethnic intimidation, deliberate infliction of mental suffering and bodily harm.

Jimmy Hoffmeyer, the girl’s father, explained that Jurnee came home from elementary school in March with much of her curly hair missing on one side. The girl said a classmate cut her hair off with scissors on the school bus.

Two days after the incident on the bus, after parents complained to the headmaster and Jurnee had her hair straightened at the barber to compensate for the different lengths, the girl on the other side came home with her hair cut.

“I thought I told you that no child should ever cut your hair again,” Hoffmeyer said to his daughter, according to “MLive.com”. Her answer: “But dad, that was the teacher.” She supposedly cut Jurnee’s hair to straighten it.

Hoffmeyer suspects a racist background because Jurnee’s mother is white and he is black. Both the classmate who cut Jurnee’s hair and the teacher were white.

Why the teacher actually used scissors is unclear. In July, the education authorities only announced that the teacher had received a reprimand because all of this violated school policy despite her “good intentions”, without the permission of her parents and without the knowledge of the district administration. Two other employees knew about the incident but did not report it. All three employees have apologized, according to the school management.

The school board also said the independent investigation found no racial bias. This included interviews with school district staff, students and families, as well as a review of videos and photos, including posts on social media. The district administration also conducted an internal investigation into the incident.

For Jurnee’s father, however, the subject does not end there. He said the district hadn’t interviewed him or the girl. Therefore, the case is now going to court.

Jurnee’s curls have now grown back, but the little one is now attending another school
