Recently, the idea of satellite-based telephone communication has been on the agenda of giant companies. Companies are in a race to bring 5G technology, which has alternatives such as high bandwidth, to space. So where does Turkey stand in the development of satellite-to-mobile networks?
Vodafone CEO: “We support satellite technologies for wider coverage”
Mobile network coverage is expanding day by day. However, this area still makes up only 10 percent of the Earth’s surface. So much so that there are many living areas where there is no coverage. The companies state that this coverage can be increased to a certain level with long structures. In addition to all these developments, Turkey’s situation became a matter of curiosity. The founder of ShiftDelete.Net, Hakkı Alkan, brought up this curious issue on Twitter with the following sentences.
Vodafone CEO Engin Aksoy, one of the most important names in mobile networks in Turkey, answered this question without delay. Aksoy stated that they support the use of satellite technologies for wide coverage and stated that they are following the issue.
On the other hand, giant companies accelerated their satellite mobile network initiatives. A new agreement has been reached between SpaceX, where Elon Musk is the CEO, and T-Mobile. In this way, Musk’s satellites will be able to provide 5G satellite service to smartphones. In other words, the need for base stations will be eliminated.
SpaceX already provides space-based internet service with the Starlink project. However, this service is not suitable for mobile network connections. The company recently filed an application with the FCC for its Starlink Mobile Service under the name Dish’s 2GHz Spectrum.
