London In Great Britain there is no heating law like in Germany. Nevertheless, the energy transition away from fossil fuels has also become a contentious issue in the kingdom. The current trigger is the British government’s ambitious plan to replace the country’s widespread gas boilers with heat pumps. This should help make the kingdom carbon neutral by 2050.

The fact that the governing conservatives do not shy away from state-imposed quotas and penalties has now led to a public outcry. By 2028, the government wants to install 600,000 heat pumps per year. Consumers are reluctant to convert given the cost of up to £10,000 (€11,600).

Although the government is subsidizing the replacement with £5,000 per system, just under 9,000 heat pumps have been exchanged for gas boilers in the first three months of this year, according to the standards organization Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).
